Nardò (Neritum or Neretum in Latin, Nerìton in Greek, Naretòn in Messapic, Nardó in local dialect) is an Italian municipality of 31,431 inhabitants in the province of Lecce, Apulia. It is located on flat land southwest of the provincial capital and includes part of the Ionian coast of Salento.
With almost 32,000 inhabitants and an area of 190 square kilometers, it is the second-largest municipality in the province by population and size, and one of the most culturally active centers in Salento. The historic center of Nardò boasts an extraordinary wealth of palaces, churches, chapels and architectural details, making it one of the most important cities of Lecce Baroque, alongside Lecce and Gallipoli.
The center of Nardò is a true triumph of Baroque art thanks to the elegant Piazza Salandra and its many churches, which testify to the city’s religious and artistic importance since becoming a diocesan seat in 1413. Among the most important monuments are the Church of San Domenico, the Church of San Trifone, the Church of Sant’Antonio and the Osanna monument near Porta San Paolo. Piazza Salandra hosts the 15th-century Spire of the Immaculate Conception, the Town Hall and the Sedile.
The city also features a castle built between the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as remarkable monuments such as the imposing Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, the University Palace and the Achille Vergari Municipal Library, which houses over 21,000 scientific, philosophical and theological volumes. Nardò is also a highly attractive tourist destination thanks to its beautiful seaside resorts: Santa Maria al Bagno, Santa Caterina, Sant’Isidoro and Porto Selvaggio.
