CHIASSO DEL BUCO FLORENCE
A unique loft in the Historic Center of Florence
Location
Chiasso, if searched in the dictionary of the Academicians of the Crusca, indicates a narrow lane, from the Latin viculus, angiportus.
In Florence there are still many in the streets of the center, others are closed by gates and still others, by the demolitions of the late nineteenth century, have completely disappeared.
Among these is the Chiasso del Buco which is divided into the one surviving post-war destruction and reconstruction, in two sections: one from via Lambertesca opens into piazza dei Salterelli and the other from piazza dei Salterelli at Chiasso dei Baroncelli.
The ancient origin of the name seems to derive from an inn which was accessed by descending into the "hole". It is said that various famous people of their time were patrons in other brigades: Il Magnifico Lorenzo, who together with Fico and Bertucce cites it in his verses, Anton Francesco Grazzini, Michelangelo and Marsilio Ficino, just to name a few.
