PAGNO - The origins of the ancient Villa dei Vescovi di Pagno date back to 749, when Queen Giselburga, wife of the Lombard king Astolfo, had a large monastery built in Pagno with an adjoining abbey church dedicated to Saints Peter and Colombano. According to tradition, Queen Giselburga also built a female monastery in Rifreddo, of which she was the abbess until her death, which took place five years later, and was buried in Pagno, as evidenced by a marble epigraph in the Lombard crypt.
The Monastery was an important center of faith and culture until 906, when it was destroyed by the invasions of the Saracen hordes.
Its reconstruction took place in the 11th century by the Marquise Adelaide of Susa. Among the Priors of the Abbey some were sons of the Marquis of Saluzzo or of local nobles.
The Priory of Pagno was active until 1511, when Pope Julius II, with "Papal Bull" established the Diocese of Saluzzo, also annexing it the Priory of Pagno. Since that moment the Curia of Saluzzo has used it as the "holiday residence of the Bishops of Saluzzo". In the 1700s the Bishop of Saluzzo Porporato, Marquis of Piasco and Sampeyre, had some important modifications carried out on the Priory, enriching the garden with a fountain. Finally, in 1979, the Curia decided to sell it.
