Stacks of books form the walls, the tip of a fountain pen serves as a chimney, and neatly sharpened pencils create the perimeter: welcome to the House of Books, a long-established wonder that transports visitors into a fairy-tale world.

This highly original creation is a true masterpiece, blending architecture, sculpture, and the finest Italian craftsmanship. But above all, it embodies a deep love for books and reading, making this charming little house a much-loved destination for readers of all ages.

The House of Books by Livio de Marchi: what to know

The House of Books is a project conceived by Livio de Marchi in 1990 while he was in Japan. The artist was determined that the first House of Books should be built in Italy, which it was, before the same project was later realised in Japan and Germany.

Both inside and out, every detail of the house is a tribute to the world of books and reading: the gate is shaped like a pair of red glasses, while the bed and table resemble large, thick volumes supported by smaller tomes, just like the chairs.

To ensure durability, all these structures were crafted from wood, intricately carved down to the finest details, including crockery, cutlery, and even a clothesline. Fans of Superquark will also recognise a desk strikingly similar to the one used by Piero Angela, sculpted by de Marchi himself.

At present, this house-museum can only be viewed from the outside. However, the Venetian artist dreams of one day opening it to visitors, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in its enchanting, literary-inspired atmosphere. His ultimate goal is to create a true refuge for book lovers.

The concept draws a parallel between the reader, who finds solace in books, and the traveller seeking shelter in a mountain refuge. The House of Books embodies the immersive nature of reading, one that fills an entire space and, quite literally, envelops the reader.

Where to find the House of Books and what to do around Belluno

The House of Books is located in Tambre, in the Alpago area of Belluno province, where the artist used to spend time as a child. Over the years, it has become the town’s most famous attraction and is situated about an hour and a half from Venice.

Reaching the House of Books is incredibly easy, particularly to ensure accessibility for children, as it sits right at the entrance to the Cansiglio Forest.

After visiting the house, visitors can venture into the forest for a day hike. The area is also home to the Village of the Cimbri, an ancient population of Celtic origin that once settled in Veneto, as well as the stunning Caglieron Caves.

Not far from here, Lake Santa Croce is another must-visit spot. It is among the most beautiful and accessible lakes in the Dolomites, making it an excellent destination for nature lovers.
