Arnaldo Pomodoro, sculptor but also an expert in theatre, graphics and poetry, was born in Romagna but owed his artistic success to the city of Milan, where he moved in the 1960s and where he died on Sunday 22 June 2025 on the eve of his 99th birthday.

During the years he lived and worked in the Lombard capital, he came into contact with other great contemporary sculptors such as Lucio Fontana, Armando Milani and Enrico Baj.

He then moved to New York where he became a teacher at major American universities and where he took part in important international art exhibitions.

Arnaldo Pomodoro also became famous and popular among ordinary people thanks to sculptural works that can easily be traced back to his hand: these are the Spheres, large-scale sculptures that have become his signature style.

What are the most famous Arnaldo Pomodoro Spheres in the world?

Among Arnaldo Pomodoro’s most important works are:

One of his first spherical works is the Sphere of 1963. Among his first large-scale works is the Sfera Grande of over 3 metres designed for the Montreal Expo.

Works by Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan

If you are in Milan, do not hesitate to take a tour to visit the important spherical sculptures that Pomodoro left to the city.

The Pomodoro Foundation has, in fact, created a kind of diffuse art exhibition of his works to be experienced with the “La Milano di Pomodoro” tour, a two-hour walk.

The “Milan of Pomodoro” tour

Here are the stages of the tour to discover Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan:

  1. First stop in Piazza Meda, where you can admire the work The Great Disc. Did you know that Pomodoro had the work installed at night, to give the Milanese an absolutely unique good morning? Basically, a gift to the city that welcomed him and raised him artistically.
  2. Second stop, Casa Museo Poldi Pezzoli, where you can visit the Sala delle Armi.
  3. Third stop, the Gallerie d’Italia, which houses the sculpture Disk in the form of a desert rose in its cloister.
  4. Last stop, the Museo del Novecento in Milan, where there are two works: The Traveller’s Column from 1959 and Sphere No. 5 from 1965.

Two hours are enough to complete this mini-tour to discover Pomodoro.

Where is Il Labirinto di Pomodoro in Milan

To conclude the tour of all of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Milanese works, a visit to the Fendi showroom of Il Labirinto di Pomodoro, an installation created between 1995 and 2011, is a must.

An itinerary characterised by reworkings of already known sculptures and forms that are still in work in progress.
