Tucked away in the green valleys of Bergamo lies a true oasis of tranquillity, well worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. The Vegetal Cathedral of Oltre il Colle is a living work of art, a testament to the power and craftsmanship of nature. Let’s explore it together.

The Vegetal Cathedral of Oltre il Colle: a majestic example of land art

Designed by Giuliano Mauri in 2010, the Vegetal Cathedral is a striking example of land art, seamlessly blending into its natural surroundings. Situated in the Orobic Prealps, more than an hour from Bergamo’s historic centre and around two hours from Milan, this unique installation rises 1,600 metres above sea level in the municipality of Oltre il Colle, nestled among the many mountains that shape the Lombardy landscape.

Perched along part of the mountain ridge, it represents the essence of land art, harmonising with the environment and creating a perfect fusion of art and nature.

A living work of art

Composed of a variety of trees, arches, and pillars, the Vegetal Cathedral of Oltre il Colle is a monument dedicated to the protection and preservation of nature. Every element of the majestic structure is crafted from fir, chestnut, and hazel wood, along with other reclaimed materials, carefully arranged to evoke the solemn atmosphere of a Gothic cathedral.

The cathedral’s five naves are mirrored in the still waters of the lake in front, while its 42 wooden columns stand in six rows of seven, each varying in height from 5 to 21 metres. Covering an area of approximately 650 square metres, the entire structure is a living work of art, constantly evolving as 42 beech trees grow and intertwine with its framework over the years.

How to get there

This peaceful oasis is accessible by car. From Oltre il Colle, north of Bergamo, follow the road towards Zambla Alta, then take the narrow path winding through the greenery of Mount Pizzo Arera.

Once you reach Plassa, continue on foot. Park your car in the herringbone parking area on the left-hand side of the road and enjoy a scenic walk along the trails.

Take in the colours of the surrounding mountain landscape and embrace the deep sense of spirituality and mysticism that lingers in the natural entrances of the site, leading you on a timeless journey.
