Bari, set against the blue backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, is one of the most sought-after destinations for those in search of the perfect blend of culture, history and seaside charm. While the city itself offers a few spots to enjoy the coastline, the real gems lie in the beaches and seaside resorts just outside the city.

Whether you’re hoping to unwind, go for a swim or try your hand at water sports, this guide will help you discover where to head for the beach near Bari and explore some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Puglia.

1. Monopoli: whitewashed houses and crystal-clear sea

Just a 40-minute drive from the regional capital lies Monopoli, a picturesque seaside town with a historic centre filled with elegant palazzi and churches, and beaches renowned for their crystal-clear waters and stunning views. Among the most popular is Cala Porta Vecchia, a small sandy cove with shallow waters, perfect for families with young children.

Another spot worth visiting is Cala Verde, a secluded beach nestled between rocky cliffs. For those who enjoy snorkelling, the Calette del Capitolo are not to be missed, while anyone in search of a sunset aperitif can head to one of the beach events regularly held at Cala Cerasa.

2. Polignano a Mare: a postcard-perfect view

A jewel of the Apulian Adriatic coast, Polignano a Mare is renowned for its dramatic cliffs that plunge into the sea and for its spectacular sea caves, many of which can be explored on boat trips.

The beaches nestled between the rocks form breathtaking and distinctive landscapes. Among the most iconic is the small bay of Lama Monachile, known for its turquoise waters shimmering against the white limestone cliffs.

Swimming between the cliffs of Polignano is an unforgettable experience, one that truly leaves a lasting impression.

3. Giovinazzo: the sea within easy reach

Another destination with authentic charm, just a few kilometres from Bari, is Giovinazzo, whose coastline is dotted with pebbly stretches and small coves.

Lido Azzurro, nestled in a picturesque bay less than a kilometre from the town centre, is one of the most popular beach clubs in the area. It’s an ideal choice for families with children, offering dedicated services to guarantee a relaxing day by the sea.

Another spot worth visiting is Cala Arena, a peaceful natural haven just a stone’s throw from the centre. Surrounded by lush greenery, this beach with crystal-clear waters features a platform and a pier that lead straight into the sea, perfect for those seeking an alternative to sandy beaches and a quieter experience.

4. Torre a Mare: a hidden gem near Bari

Just a few minutes from the heart of Bari lies Torre a Mare Beach, a captivating spot known for its unspoilt, rugged charm. The coastline, mostly rocky, is the most renowned in the small seaside village and stands out for its historic fortification, locally known as “the Bunker”, as well as for the Punta della Penna promontory, named for its shape, which resembles a bird’s tail.

One of the area’s most striking features is the Queen’s Cave, a naturally formed, mouth-shaped cavity dating back to the Neolithic period. To reach it, visitors can descend a set of steps carved directly into the rock. According to legend, Bona Sforza, Duchess of Bari, used to bathe in these crystal-clear waters during the 16th century, a tale that adds to the enduring allure of the place.

5. Mola di Bari: a peaceful escape

Just 20 minutes from Bari, Mola di Bari is the perfect spot for a relaxing beach day away from the crowds. Torre Mola beach offers golden sands and crystal-clear waters, ideal for unwinding in tranquillity.

For those seeking a more natural setting, the area of Porto Ghiacciolo is highly recommended. This small cove, sheltered by rocky cliffs, boasts clear, calm waters and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of busier resorts.

Another striking location is Cala Pietra Egea, a rugged inlet in the hamlet of Cozze. Nestled along the coastal road linking Mola di Bari to Polignano a Mare and Brindisi, this hidden gem is characterised by pebbles and rocky outcrops, typical of the Apulian coastline.

The sea here is a vivid, crystalline blue, immediately catching the eye with its depth of colour. The seabed, teeming with marine life and vegetation, makes it a fantastic spot for snorkelling. What truly sets this cove apart, however, is its setting: surrounded by a stunning expanse of prickly pear plants, it offers a striking contrast between the lush Mediterranean flora and the deep blue sea.

6. Pane e Pomodoro Beach: the seaside heart of Bari

We end our tour at Pane e Pomodoro Beach, arguably the most iconic lido in Bari, located just a short walk from the historic centre. This sandy stretch, dotted with occasional rocks and low cliffs, runs along the seafront on the southern edge of the city, just beyond the Bari Vecchia district. From here, one can enjoy stunning views of historic landmarks such as the Teatro Margherita, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the majestic Basilica of San Nicola, a true symbol of the city.

Though mainly a free-access beach, Pane e Pomodoro is well equipped to offer a comfortable experience, with amenities including bars, public showers, and lifeguards on duty. The beach owes its name to a beloved local tradition: each summer, Bari residents head here with a simple yet cherished snack of bread and tomato, a symbol of seaside life passed down through generations.
