Standing proudly in the heart of Florence, Santa Maria Novella station is not only a key transport hub but also a landmark of architectural and historical significance. Opened in 1935, this striking structure is a remarkable example of Italian Rationalism, an architectural movement that defined an era.

Florence Santa Maria Novella: a major hub for millions of travellers

With an average of 160,000 daily passengers and a total of 59 million visitors each year, Florence Santa Maria Novella is one of Italy’s busiest railway stations. Thanks to its central location, it serves as a key point of arrival and departure, offering seamless connections with buses, trams and taxis.

From its origins to rationalism

The history of Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station is a journey through time. The city’s first railway station, the Leopolda, was built in 1844, but was soon followed by the more modern Maria Antonia station, located within the city walls. However, it was in the 1930s that Florence witnessed the construction of the station as we know it today.

The project, commissioned to the Gruppo Toscano and led by architect Giovanni Michelucci, is widely regarded as a masterpiece of rationalist architecture. The building is defined by its strong horizontal lines, which offset the verticality of the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. Its façade, dominated by an expansive glass wall, floods the spacious atrium with natural light, creating an environment that feels at once grand and welcoming.

A fusion of art and history

Florence Santa Maria Novella station is more than just a transit hub: it is a treasure trove of artworks and historical significance. Inside, visitors can admire sculptures by Italo Griselli and paintings by Ottone Rosai and Mario Romoli, which lend beauty and character to the station’s interiors.

The station also regularly hosts exhibitions and cultural events, making it a landmark destination for art and culture enthusiasts.

Redevelopment and modern services

Over the years, Florence Santa Maria Novella station has undergone significant redevelopment. The primary aim has been to preserve the building’s architectural integrity while equipping it with all the comforts and modern services expected today.

The station now offers a wide range of facilities for travellers, including ticket offices, a left-luggage service, a pharmacy, a tourist information point, parking spaces, and more. A dedicated Blue Room is also available to assist passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.

Interesting facts about the station

This station has witnessed countless events and anecdotes throughout its history. It has served as the backdrop for well-known films, including Amici Miei by Mario Monicelli.

Yet this key railway hub also bears the scars of some of the darkest chapters in Italy’s past. In 1943, a train departed from platform 16 carrying 300 people, most of them Jewish, on a journey marked by anguish and despair. Its destination: the Auschwitz concentration camp.

A plaque on platform 8 commemorates another convoy that left from this very station, transporting around a thousand people, mostly political prisoners, to the Nazi death camps.
