Eduardo de Filippo left his mark on the history of theatre and on the history of Naples, his home town. In the Neapolitan regional capital you can visit various places connected with this extraordinary artist – playwright, actor, director, scriptwriter and poet – but it’s particularly moving to walk along the street where he was born, in the Chiaia neighbourhood, where it all began.

The house where Eduardo de Filippo was born

The house where Eduardo was born is now at 14 Via Vittoria Colonna, but was once at number 5. The change in the street number is due to a number of changes in the street names in the area (and also involved the birthplace of Eduardo’s brother, Peppino, who was born at 28/O Via Bausan). The correct address, which is the subject of doubt and debate, is confirmed by the baptismal register of the parish of Chiaia.

The Chiaia neighbourhood, where Eduardo was born, stands out for its elegance and is characterised by beautiful historic buildings. Today this area is known for its charming shops, its nightlife, its museums, its public park and a particularly beautiful stretch of seafront.

The holiday home in Velletri

Another place much loved by Eduardo de Filippo was Velletri, in the metropolitan city of Rome. Here, in the seventies, the artist bought a splendid villa surrounded by greenery and tranquillity, and spent many weekends and holidays there until 1984, the year of his death.

It was in this house that De Filippo lived with his wife, Isabella Quarantotti, a writer and screenwriter, and Angelica, the daughter Quarantotti had from a previous marriage. After De Filippo’s death, Angelica lived in the villa with her partner Gian Maria Volonté, also an actor. Put up for sale in 2019 for 1.5 million euros, the villa is spread over three floors, has a charming living room surrounded by windows overlooking the garden, a kitchen, a dining room and a fitness area complete with sauna.

On the second floor is the sleeping area with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a second living room with large windows overlooking the sea. The top floor is an attic. In the two-hectare park surrounding the villa, three small villas of 70 square metres each have been built.

The island of Isca

On this tour of Eduardo de Filippo’s haunts, we can’t leave out the island of Isca, on the Amalfi Coast, which once belonged to the great playwright: he bought it in the 1950s and chose it as his summer residence. De Filippo stayed there until his death.
