Morbegno is located in the lower Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, in the Lombardy region.
The Bitto stream flows through the town, running along the historic centre.
Here is an overview of what to see in Morbegno and how much it costs to live there.
What to see in a day in Morbegno
Since it is a small municipality, Morbegno lends itself to being visited in a single day, although a longer stay is recommended so as not to miss everything beautiful and interesting in the surrounding area.
Here’s what to see.
Malacrida Palace
For lovers of historic buildings, a recommended stop is Palazzo Malacrida (a building constructed in the 1700s), located in the ancient hamlet of Scima ai cà. The historic building, an example of the Rococo style, features valuable interior decorations, including representations of the arts and sciences painted on the ceiling.
Morbegno Museum of Natural History
Another attraction is the Civic Museum of Natural History, which offers free admission. The museum is housed inside Palazzo Gualteroni, an 18th-century building located in the historic centre of Morbegno.
Here, visitors can admire exhibits illustrating the natural environment of the Central Alps. The Earth Sciences section and the Wildlife section occupy the two floors of Palazzo Gualteroni.
Morbegno Town Hall and the Bitto Bridge
Dating back to the 15th century, the palace once belonged to the Castelli family of Sannazzaro and today houses Morbegno Town Hall. Its current appearance differs from the original due to extensive renovation work carried out during the 1700s.
Continuing the walk through the historic centre, one inevitably has to cross the Bitto stream, and to do so one uses the Bitto Bridge, built in 1883. At the centre of the bridge stands the statue of St John of Nepomuk, which was already present on the previous bridge before the current one was constructed. The statue, which gazes towards the historic centre, dates back to 1756.
Another well-known bridge is the Ganda Bridge, an elegant stone structure built in the 17th century to connect the old town with the ancient village of Desco. With its scenic arches over the Bitto stream, it is one of the town’s most striking landmarks and offers a panoramic view that attracts photographers and visitors alike.
The churches of Morbegno
Particularly interesting are the religious buildings, starting with the Church of San Martino e Ossario, which was completely rebuilt between 1566 and 1589. The church stands within Morbegno’s cemetery. Among the most noteworthy frescoes inside are those depicting St Marino and the Madonna Enthroned with the Baby Jesus (16th century).
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built between 1337 and 1341 and stands in the heart of the village. It is said that this church effectively gave birth to the community of Morbegno, being its first parish. The Baroque forms that characterise the building are the result of renovations carried out between 1620 and 1669.
Morbegno in Cantina
One of the most important events in the Valtellina town is “Morbegno in Cantina”, which takes place in autumn over three weekends. Visitors are offered a series of culinary and wine-tasting tours, with several wineries set up throughout the town.
Nature and surroundings
In addition to the historic centre, there is an immense natural heritage to enjoy, ideal for lovers of outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking.
Various routes are available for cycle tourists, including the Valtellina Trail and the San Marco Pass. Several trails are also available for trekkers.
Not to be missed is the Bridge in the Tartano Sky, a Tibetan-style footbridge located just under 20 km from the historic centre of Morbegno. The bridge spans the Tartano Valley and is 140 metres high and 234 metres long.
These dimensions explain why it is considered the highest Tibetan footbridge in Europe. As it is highly popular, at weekends and during August those wishing to cross the bridge must have a ticket.
