There are many mountain villages immersed in the Alps and located almost on the border with Italy. Among these is Predoi, the northernmost village in Italy.

It is located in Alto Adige (South Tyrol) and is the only village in Italy north of the 47th parallel. About 500 people live here, and here’s what you need to know about this tiny village.

The history of Predoi

The history of Italy’s northernmost town is closely linked to the land it lies on: in the past copper was mined here, while today the driving force behind its small economy is craftsmanship, particularly bobbin lace making.

From a historical point of view, Predoi has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC, however, the first concrete evidence only dates back to the Middle Ages.

Recently it has become a renowned summer destination for those who love the mountains and hiking in nature.

The legend of Predoi copper

According to popular legend, copper was discovered by chance here in Predoi by a farmer who was trying to tame a bull.

The horns of the enraged animal struck the ground and caused golden sand to emerge. Everyone thought it was gold, but then they discovered it was copper.

How to get to Predoi, the northernmost town in Italy

Predoi is easily reached from Bolzano, in the direction of the Austrian border. It’s about two hours from the regional capital and a few kilometres from the Austrian border.

There is no train station in Predoi, the closest one being in Brunico. From there, buses leave every hour and will take you to the northernmost town in Italy.

What to see in Predoi

The small village, located in the Aurina Valley, has some gems that are absolutely worth discovering:

• the Mining Museum, where you can learn more about the history of the people of Predoi. The mine was closed, like almost all Italian mines, in 1971 and transformed into a tourist attraction. Today you can take a guided tour to explore the mining tunnels, and there’s also a treatment centre for asthma sufferers, right inside the mine;
• the small church of Santo Spirito, the oldest in the entire Aurina valley. Dating back to 1455, it was the place of worship for the miners who crossed the Tauri Pass to get to Austria;
• the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, an ideal place for those who love a holiday in contact with nature. You can cross the park on foot or by mountain bike.

Excursions

Among the excursions you can do in Predoi, especially in summer, the one that leads to the Riva di Tures waterfalls is certainly a must. Nearby you’ll also find the splendid mediaeval fortress of the same name.

Still on the subject of nature trails and walks, nearby you can visit the Mühlental Valley and Lake Neves.

What to visit in the surroundings of Predoi

In the heart of South Tyrol, in the vicinity of Predoi, it is possible to visit several enchanting places: starting from Brunico itself, whose historic centre is very charming, and whose castle is also famous.

Another interesting destination is the village of Fonte della Roccia, in the same valley, which is made up entirely of mountain huts; finally, for ski enthusiasts, the town of Cadipietra is perfect.
