Genoa is a captivating city, steeped in history, culture and natural beauty. What’s more, just a few kilometres from its centre lie some of Italy’s most stunning beaches and most charming coastal villages.

For those in search of a slice of paradise to soak up the sun, swim in crystal-clear waters and take in picture-postcard views, the Riviera di Levante offers it all. From hidden coves to traditional fishing hamlets and dramatic seascapes, here are the best seaside destinations for a day trip from Genoa.

Genoa: the beaches and coves of the “Superba”

With its historic port and vibrant atmosphere, Genoa is not just a city of commerce and culture, but also an appealing destination for a seaside escape. Stretching along 35 kilometres of coastline, the city offers a series of delightful coves and beaches, all easily accessible from the centre, even by public transport, and well equipped with rental facilities, lifeguard stations, bars, public toilets and showers.

For those who enjoy water sports, Genoa is the ideal spot: whether it’s snorkelling, windsurfing, or simply a boat excursion, the Ligurian coast provides plenty of opportunities. During the summer months, the city’s beaches come alive with festivals and events, ranging from live music evenings to sporting fixtures like regattas.

Boccadasse beach

Boccadasse is one of Genoa’s most charming neighbourhoods, a former fishing village renowned for its pastel-hued houses overlooking the sea. Its small, pebbled beach offers an intimate setting, while the area’s crystal-clear waters and picturesque narrow streets make it a particularly enchanting place for a stroll.

The seafront promenade of Corso Italia is dotted with seafood restaurants and traditional gelaterias, where visitors can enjoy fresh local dishes or a wide range of ice cream flavours.

Pegli beach: a perfect balance of nature and relaxation

Located in the western part of Genoa, Pegli is one of the city’s most popular seaside districts. Its long stretch of sandy beach is well equipped with beach clubs and a seafront promenade, perfect for a sunset stroll.

The area also boasts plenty of green spaces, including the Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini Park, a lush garden overlooking the sea where visitors can unwind in nature. To round off the day, the nearby Naval Museum offers the chance to pair a relaxing beach outing with a touch of culture.

Nervi beach: breathtaking views over the sea

Nervi is one of Genoa’s most refined residential neighbourhoods and offers sweeping views over the Paradise Gulf. The beach in the Capolungo area is known for its dramatic rocky coastline, an ideal spot to take in one of Liguria’s most vivid sunsets. It’s no surprise that this corner of Genoa was immortalised in the songs of the great Fabrizio De André.

Photography enthusiasts will find no shortage of inspiration here. From Nervi, the scenic “Poggio degli Ulivi” trail follows the coastline, offering a beautiful route for walking or cycling.

Vesima beach: perfect for pets companions

Easily accessible on foot via the pedestrian path that runs alongside the Aurelia coastal road, the small beach of Vesima lies between Arenzano and Terrarossa. It welcomes visitors with the Madonna dell’Agugia, a centuries-old statue of the Virgin placed on a rock, long used as a landmark by sailors.

This stretch of coastline, chosen by renowned architect Renzo Piano as the home of his Building Workshop, is made up of smooth pebbles and stones that mirror the grey tones of the surrounding mountains, gently sloping into warm, turquoise waters. Vesima is also known for its pet-friendly beach, equipped with water fountains and waste bags to help owners keep the area clean. Emergency veterinary services are available on-site in case of minor incidents or accidents.

Quinto beach

Located to the east of Genoa, Quinto al Mare is a peaceful and less touristy spot, ideal for those in search of a more laid-back seaside experience. Its varied coastline ranges from small rocky coves to sandy stretches, offering a quieter and more intimate atmosphere away from the crowds.

Camogli beach: where the sea meets the mountains

Nestled between the deep blue Ligurian Sea and the dramatic silhouette of the surrounding mountains, Camogli beach offers a striking blend of natural beauty. With its mix of fine sand and pebbles, and the colourful façades of the houses lining the seafront, the village has the charm of a painting brought to life.

Don’t miss a visit to the elegant Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the nearby Dragonara Castle, which add historical depth to the picturesque setting.

For those in search of outdoor adventure or a moment in nature, Camogli is also the ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding promontory. Whether by boat or on foot via one of the many scenic hiking trails, it’s easy to reach San Niccolò di Capodimonte, Punta Chiappa and the secluded abbey of San Fruttuoso.

Baia delle Favole, Sestri Levante

As its name suggests, the Baia delle Favole is a place of storybook beauty. Just a stone’s throw from the centre of Sestri Levante, this enchanting bay was named in honour of one of its most celebrated visitors: the Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who found in this landscape the kind of magic that inspires a tale.

Its gently sloping sandy beaches and clear, shallow waters make it perfect for families and more cautious swimmers. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the bay is a peaceful retreat, ideal for those seeking a break from the everyday rush, immersed in nature and the timeless charm of the Ligurian coast.

Genoa is more than just a maritime city, it’s a meeting point of cultures and traditions. Its coastline hides countless unspoilt and evocative spots, perfect for sun, relaxation and a taste of authentic Italian seaside life.
