Precotto is part of the municipality of Milan and, like many other neighbourhoods now incorporated into the metropolis, it was once a town in its own right. In 1920, the autonomous municipality of Gorla-Precotto was established, but just three years later, in 1923, it was annexed to the city of Milan along with ten other municipalities.

The name “Precotto” likely originates from a dialectal form (prato-cotto) and refers to a rural settlement dating back to the 1100s. It was situated on the border of what are now the districts of Greco, Gorla, Crescenzago, and Sesto San Giovanni to the north, along the road leading to Monza.

What to see in the Precotto district of Milan

Today, Precotto appears as a cluster of residential buildings extending along Viale Monza, while the old intra-municipal road that once connected the former municipalities of Gorla–Precotto and Sesto is still accessible, leading from Prato Centenaro, a small settlement near the Niguarda district.

Via Cislaghi was historically the heart of the village, home to the churchyard of San Michele Arcangelo.

Nowadays, the area mainly consists of social housing, particularly along the main roads.

However, in the side streets, it is still possible to find case di ringhiera, traditional Milanese tenement buildings. These are not always renovated and, unfortunately, are often left in a state of neglect.

Since 2000, significant progress has been made thanks to an urban regeneration plan, which has revitalised the part of the district surrounding San Michele Arcangelo Church.

Additionally, in some areas near Viale Monza, warehouses and logistics facilities are gradually being replaced by new residential developments, which will undoubtedly breathe new life into the entire neighbourhood.

The Church of St Michael the Archangel

Visitors to Precotto should not miss the Church of St Michael the Archangel, whose foundation stone was laid in 1865 on the remains of a medieval church.

This neoclassical-style church is characterised by its first floor, featuring six Doric pilasters and three entrances. The central section is adorned with a lunette window framed by two Ionic pilasters.

Inside, the church has a single nave with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Notably, the altar of the Chapel of the Crucifix and the choir stalls of the presbytery were donated in 1867 by the Church of San Damiano, which ceased religious services that same year.

Among the most remarkable works to admire are:
