Like every year at Christmas, the city of Milan transforms into a dazzling landscape of lights, colours and artistic installations. In addition to the traditional Christmas tree that will tower over Piazza Duomo, decorations are planned along the main streets, in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and across the outer districts, ensuring that the festive atmosphere extends throughout the entire city. Here are all the events not to be missed in the Lombard capital.

The sponsor who will light up Christmas 2025

On 6 July 2025, the City of Milan published a call for proposals to identify potential sponsors for the city’s Christmas trees and festive illuminations. The aim is to create a unique atmosphere in the city during the holiday season, promoting creativity, inclusivity and sustainability, while enhancing Milan’s appeal to tourists, including in neighbourhoods beyond the historic centre.

According to the official guidelines, the illuminations must be taken down by 6 January. The outcome of the selection process has not yet been announced, so for now, the people of Milan can only speculate about which sponsor will light up Christmas 2025.

When the Christmas Tree in Piazza Duomo will be switched on in 2025

For now, neither the official lighting date nor further details about the iconic Christmas tree that will, as tradition dictates, tower over Piazza Duomo have been announced. In recent years, the ceremony has usually taken place between 5 and 7 December, coinciding with celebrations for Saint Ambrose, and it is expected to follow a similar timetable in 2025.

It is also likely that, in line with tradition, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II will once again host a grand Christmas tree sponsored by a prestigious brand, with the lighting expected in the early days of December. While awaiting official confirmation, Milan is getting ready to renew one of the most enchanting moments of its festive season.

The “Christmas of Trees” project continues

The “Christmas of Trees” initiative, conceived by Marco Balich and gifted to the City of Milan by the Bracco Foundation, was launched in 2020 as a symbolic gesture to bring light and creativity back to the city after the most challenging months of the pandemic. Since then, it has become one of the most eagerly awaited seasonal events, transforming Milan into a widespread stage of artistic installations, themed trees and luminous works.

For 2025, the City of Milan has confirmed its intention to carry on and further expand the project, extending it to less central neighbourhoods to create a luminous trail that embraces the entire city, offering residents a collective and shared festive experience.

Christmas Market in Piazza Duomo 2025

During the festive season, as tradition dictates, Piazza Duomo will once again host a large Christmas market featuring around 60 wooden chalets showcasing Italian handicrafts, gift ideas, decorations and local specialities. Although the full schedule has not yet been officially confirmed, the market is expected to open during the first week of December and run through to Epiphany.

This market offers a charming opportunity for Christmas shopping in the heart of Milan, combining atmospheric strolls beneath the lights with the chance to discover unique, traditional pieces.
