The origin of the name and history of San Giovanni a Teduccio

There are several theories regarding the origin of the neighbourhood’s name, with one of the most widely accepted suggesting that it derives from the presence of a villa belonging to Theodosia, daughter of the Roman Emperor Theodosius. Traces of this villa are believed to have been discovered during archaeological excavations in an architectural complex dating back to the late Imperial period, around the 4th century AD.

San Giovanni a Teduccio remained an independent municipality until 1925, when, under the Fascist regime, it was incorporated into the city of Naples.

Like many other areas of the city, this neighbourhood was affected by the post-war property boom that took place in Naples from the Second World War onwards. However, San Giovanni a Teduccio has managed to retain, at least in part, the distinctive characteristics of a traditional town.

This area was home to major manufacturing plants, including Cirio, the most significant canning industry in the Mediterranean, and the Opificio di Pietrarsa, Italy’s first locomotive and rail factory. The latter served the country’s first railway line (the Naples-Portici route) before being converted into a railway museum following its closure in 1975.

In recent decades, the City of Naples has sought to revitalise the area through various projects, such as constructing buildings for Federico II University and redeveloping the port of Vigliena. Here stands the historic Vigliena Fort, a symbol of resistance during the Partenopean Revolution of 1799, though today it remains in a state of decay and neglect.
