When will the heating be switched on in Naples in 2025?

With the arrival of autumn and the gradual drop in temperatures, many households are beginning to wonder when it will be possible to switch on the heating in 2025. In Italy, the use of heating systems is regulated by national legislation that divides the country into different climate zones, setting precise dates for when systems can be switched on and off. Naples falls within one of the warmest zones in the country. Let’s find out which one it is and when the heating can be turned on.

Climate zones and heating: how it works

The division into climate zones, introduced by Italian legislation, aims to optimise the use of heating according to the actual needs of residents in the various regions. Italy is divided into six climate zones, from Zone A (the warmest) to Zone F (the coldest), each with specific rules for when heating can be used. Naples lies in one of the warmer zones.

When does the heating come on in Naples?

Naples, like other coastal cities in southern Italy, is classified as Climate Zone C, with specific rules for the 2025–2026 winter season. Being in this zone means that the metropolitan area enjoys relatively mild weather during winter, which justifies the use of heating for shorter periods than in colder regions such as northern Italy.

According to the provisions of Presidential Decree No. 412 of 1993, heating in Zone C municipalities may be switched on from 15 November 2025 and remain on until 31 March 2026.

During this period:

• Heating may be on for a maximum of ten hours per day.
• Residents may choose the specific times, provided they fall within that limit.

This restriction aims to reduce energy consumption and encourage more sustainable use of resources.
Households can decide how to distribute the heating hours during the day, but it is advisable to schedule operation during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and evening.

It is important to remember that boilers must undergo regular inspections and comply with the emission limits established by law. Public and commercial buildings must also adhere to the same on/off restrictions.

Possible exemptions and extraordinary activation

Although these rules are established by national regulations, in exceptional cases—such as unusually severe weather conditions—local authorities may authorise temporary exemptions to allow the heating to be switched on earlier or to remain on for longer.

For example, if there are days of intense cold in November, the Municipality of Naples may decide to permit early activation to safeguard public health.

How to reduce consumption and improve energy efficiency

In addition to respecting legal limits, there are several strategies to optimise heating use and cut energy consumption, including:

• Using programmable thermostats: these devices allow automatic control of heating times, ensuring that the home stays warm only when necessary.
• Improving thermal insulation: enhancing wall and roof insulation significantly reduces heat loss, keeping interiors warmer with lower energy use.
• Regular maintenance: servicing boilers and heating systems, and thoroughly cleaning radiators (including inside), ensures efficient and safe operation.
