EUR is a district in the southern part of Rome. Originally conceived during the fascist era, it was intended to host the Universal Exposition in Rome, planned for 1942 but never realised due to the outbreak of war.

The district takes its name from this very project, as EUR stands for Esposizione Universale Roma (Universal Exposition Rome).

Although the exhibition never took place, EUR and its distinctive architecture have endured to this day, evolving into a residential, institutional, and commercial hub. It is now home to many celebrities and prominent figures who have chosen to live in the area.

Let’s explore what to do, what to see, and the cost of living in EUR, Rome.

EUR Pond

The EUR Pond is an artificial lake situated just before the Palalottomatica (for those coming from the city centre) and immediately after the district’s large obelisk.

Surrounded by a vast green park, it is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists who come here for a stroll, an ice cream, or to let their children play. The park is particularly popular with families and young people from southern Rome.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy on the water. Alongside a well-established rowing school for children and teenagers, visitors can rent a pedal boat or take a ride on the boat that crosses the entire lake.

At sunset, the reflection of the ENI building shimmering on the water creates a striking view. During the summer, an open-air cinema is set up on stilts over the lake, offering a unique way to watch a film.

Getting there is easy: simply take Metro Line B towards Laurentina and alight at “EUR Palasport” station.

Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the western side of the EUR district, just beyond the lake. This imposing structure is approached via a long staircase, lined with plants and hedges, leading up to the modern-style basilica.

At the top of the staircase, visitors can enjoy a unique perspective of the neighbourhood while also exploring the esplanade and the distinctive villas that dot the hillside where the basilica is situated.

Palace of Italian Civilisation (Square Colosseum)

The Palace of Italian Civilisation, more commonly known as the “Square Colosseum” by Romans, is an unmissable landmark when visiting EUR.

In addition to housing the headquarters of the fashion house Fendi, it was also the setting chosen by AS Roma to celebrate Paulo Dybala’s signing in the summer of 2022. Today, it stands as one of the defining symbols of modern Rome, leaving visitors with a striking impression of Italian heritage.

Completed in the post-war period, the palace’s distinctive architecture is particularly striking at sunset and during the evening, when dramatic lighting highlights its 216 arches.

EUR Obelisk

The EUR Obelisk, also known as the Marconi Obelisk, is a key landmark in the district and a crucial element of Rome’s road network. Positioned at the centre of a vast roundabout, it is surrounded by a constant flow of cars, buses, mopeds, and motorbikes.

One of the most modern obelisks in Rome, it was created by sculptor Arturo Dazzi during the district’s construction period for the Universal Exhibition of Rome, serving as a tribute to Guglielmo Marconi. Standing at 45 metres, it is among the tallest obelisks in the city.

The Fuksas Cloud

The Rome Convention Centre, commonly known as the Fuksas Cloud, is impossible to miss upon entering the EUR district. Designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas, this multi-purpose venue hosts conferences, performances, Formula E events, and even served as a Covid-19 vaccination hub.

What truly sets this structure apart, however, is the striking installation housed within it: the Cloud. Enclosed in a glass shell, this enormous, cloud-shaped feature contains an auditorium, bars, and several meeting rooms, making it a distinctive architectural masterpiece.

Buying a home in EUR: average sale prices

How much does it cost to rent a home in EUR?

Rental prices in the EUR, Torrino, and Tintoretto areas currently stand at €16,18 per square metre.
