In addition to its typical Mediterranean landscape and the villas of Roman nobility, just 200 metres from the centre of Balduina lies an ancient hamlet known as the Borghetto delle Fornaci.

This area, characterised by its clay-rich soil, was once home to numerous kilns used for brick production. In fact, the earliest furnaces are believed to date back to the 1st century AD.

During the Renaissance, bricks from these kilns were used in the construction of St Peter’s Basilica. By the early 20th century, small residential buildings were constructed around the craft workshops to house the kiln workers, and around the same time, the Church of Santa Maria della Provvidenza was built.

The furnaces remained in operation until the early 1960s. Today, visitors can still see the remains of the Pomilia and Veschi kilns, offering a glimpse into the area’s industrial past.
