Located approximately 30 kilometres from the city centre, Rome-Fiumicino International Airport is the main airport serving the Italian capital and one of the country’s most important hubs. It is well connected to the city by both train and bus services, with millions of passengers travelling on domestic and international routes passing through its terminals each month (4,633,430 in May 2025).

Alongside Ciampino Airport, it forms part of Rome’s airport network.

Who is Fiumicino Airport named after?

Fiumicino Airport is officially named after Leonardo da Vinci, the renowned Renaissance inventor, artist and polymath. As a tribute to him, the airport features reproductions of several of his works on display throughout the terminal.

History and structure of Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino Airport officially opened on 15 January 1961, in response to the increasing volume of air traffic that had rendered Ciampino Airport inadequate. From that point onwards, Ciampino has been used primarily for domestic and charter flights, while Fiumicino handles both domestic and international departures.

The airport features an integrated railway station, conveniently located just opposite the arrivals area of Terminal 3, making it an easy option for travel to and from the city centre.

Trenitalia operates two main services from the airport:

Tickets for both Trenitalia services can be purchased online or at the station. Children up to the age of 12, as well as pets in appropriate carriers, travel free of charge.

The terminals

Fiumicino Airport has two terminals (T1 and T3) and three runways: 16L/34R and 16R/34L, which are 4,000 metres apart.

Getting to Fiumicino

Leonardo Express – Termini railway station

The Leonardo Express departs from platforms 23 and 24 at Rome’s Termini Station every 15 minutes, operating daily and providing a non-stop service between the city centre and the airport.

The first train leaves at 5:50 a.m. and the last at 10:50 p.m. In the opposite direction, the first departure is at 6:38 a.m., with the final service at 11:38 p.m. Tickets cost €14 each way.

Termini Station, the capital’s main hub for public and private transport, is also the meeting point of both metro lines. From here, it is easy to travel across Italy, thanks to the many high-speed trains that either pass through or terminate at the station.

FL1 and Tiburtina railway station

The regional FL1 line connects Fiumicino Airport with Roma Tiburtina Station, the city’s second-largest railway hub and a key terminus for several urban lines. In addition to the FL1, the following services also operate through Tiburtina:

The full journey on the FL1 takes around 45 minutes, with 10 intermediate stops along the way. The most central and frequently used stations are Trastevere (27 minutes), Ostiense (31 minutes), and Tuscolana (41 minutes). Trains run every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on public holidays.

Transport options to Fiumicino Airport

The most affordable way to reach Leonardo da Vinci Airport, regardless of your location in the city, is by bus, although this mode of transport is often affected by heavy traffic. Several bus services operate routes to the airport:

If none of these services meets your needs, you can also take a licensed taxi from the City of Rome or hire a car.
