When visiting the capital, a stop in Trastevere, one of Rome’s most charming and popular neighbourhoods, is a must. But which spots are truly unmissable in this vibrant area?

Here’s a guide to what to see and do in Trastevere, along with a look at local property prices.

Piazza Trilussa

Named after the great Roman poet, Piazza Trilussa is one of the city’s most popular meeting spots for young people, a lively hub for nightlife and a gateway to the heart of the Trastevere district.

One of the most iconic squares in Rome, it’s home to the monument to Trilussa and the nearby Fountain of Ponte Sisto.

Ponte Sisto

Standing directly in front of Piazza Trilussa, this medieval bridge is widely considered one of the most beautiful in Rome. It links the Trastevere area with the historic centre of the city.

The alleys

Winding out from the square, the narrow cobbled alleys are lined with traditional trattorias and osterias. With their old buildings and iconic sampietrini paving, they carry a timeless and uniquely Roman charm.

Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere

The most important place of worship in the neighbourhood, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere dates back to the 4th century.

Its façade is adorned with a splendid golden mosaic, while the interior is equally rich in gilded decorations and intricate mosaics.

In addition to the basilica, the square features a beautiful fountain, thought to be the oldest in Rome still in operation.

Originally designed by Donato Bramante, the fountain was later refined by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Carlo Fontana, two of the most celebrated architects and sculptors who contributed extensively to the artistic heritage of Rome and the Vatican.

Villa Farnesina

Villa Farnesina is a historic residence showcasing classic Renaissance architecture. Its interiors house numerous artworks and frescoes by Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo and Baldassarre Peruzzi, including the renowned Sala delle Prospettive.

Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

One of the most important churches in the neighbourhood, the Basilica is dedicated to Saint Cecilia, a Roman noblewoman who lived on the site where the church now stands and later became the patron saint of music.

It features a beautiful cloister, is adorned inside with stunning frescoes and a renowned statue of Saint Cecilia, and includes an underground area that preserves archaeological remains of an ancient Roman house.

Piazza San Cosimato

This lively and tradition-rich square hosts Trastevere’s local market every day except Sunday. It’s a vibrant spot where visitors can find a variety of typical food products and experience the daily rhythm of the neighbourhood.

Basilica of San Crisogono

Among the oldest churches in Rome, the Basilica of San Crisogono dates back to the 4th century. Inside, it houses ancient frescoes and magnificent marble floors, offering a glimpse into the city’s early Christian heritage.

Palazzo Corsini

One of the most beautiful museums in the city, Palazzo Corsini, along with Palazzo Barberini, is one of the two locations of the National Gallery of Ancient Art.

It houses masterpieces by artists such as Raphael, Bernini, Rubens, Caravaggio and Titian.

Museo di Roma in Trastevere

Another fascinating museum, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere features a permanent collection exploring Roman society from the late 18th to the 20th century, as well as a variety of temporary exhibitions, often centred on photography.

Tiber Island

Just a five-minute walk from Trastevere, Tiber Island sits in the middle of the River Tiber and is home to one of Rome’s most historic bridges, the Ponte Fabricio, which dates back to 62 BC.
