It is an event wrapped in mystery and solemnity, a pivotal moment in the life of the Catholic Church that draws the gaze of the entire world: the Conclave, the gathering of cardinals called to elect a new pope.

But where does this ancient ritual, rich in history and symbolism, actually take place? Where do the cardinals, arriving from every corner of the globe, withdraw from the outside world to carry out their sacred duty?

The answer lies in the Sistine Chapel, one of the Vatican’s most iconic and awe-inspiring spaces, a masterpiece of art and faith that has served as the backdrop to this momentous occasion for centuries.

The Sistine Chapel: a treasure trove of art and history

Built between 1477 and 1480 at the behest of Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, from whom it takes its name, the Sistine Chapel was constructed on the remains of the former Cappella Magna. From the outset, it was conceived as a jewel box of artistic masterpieces, intended to host the foremost exponents of Renaissance painting.

A group of exceptionally gifted artists, including Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Rosselli, was entrusted with decorating the walls, producing the Stories of Moses and Christ along with portraits of the Popes. However, it was with the arrival of Michelangelo Buonarroti that the chapel reached the zenith of its splendour.

Commissioned by Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted the vault with unforgettable scenes from the Book of Genesis, a pictorial cycle of extraordinary expressive power that culminates in the iconic Creation of Adam. Years later, he returned to the chapel to paint The Last Judgment on the altar wall, a work of immense dramatic intensity that continues to evoke awe and admiration among visitors from all over the world.

The Conclave: an ancient rite between tradition and modernity

The Sistine Chapel hosted its first Conclave in 1492. Since then, and especially from 1878 onwards, it has become the official setting for this pivotal event in the life of the Catholic Church.

Cardinals from across the globe gather in this sacred space to carry out their solemn duty: electing the successor of Saint Peter, the Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. The voting takes place in an atmosphere of absolute secrecy, with the cardinals cut off from the outside world, immersed in prayer and reflection.

In earlier times, the cardinals were quite literally walled inside the Chapel until a new Pontiff was chosen, sometimes for years, amid a climate of austerity and isolation. Today, while strict confidentiality and contemplation are still upheld, the cardinals are accommodated in the nearby Domus Sanctae Marthae.

Yet the Sistine Chapel remains the beating heart of the Conclave. It is here that the ballots are cast, and it is here that the world waits with bated breath for the appearance of the smoke (fumata) the signal that reveals the outcome of the election.

The fumata: a symbol that unites the world

The wait for the fumata is a moment of intense emotional anticipation for Catholics across the globe. St Peter’s Square, along with millions watching via the media, gathers symbolically around the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, awaiting the final decision.

Black smoke signals that the voting has yet to produce a result. The wait drags on, and tension mounts. Then, at last, the moment everyone has been hoping for: a thick, unmistakable white smoke rises from the chimney. The bells ring out in celebration, the crowd erupts in a roar of joy, Habemus Papam! A new pope has been elected.

The Sistine Chapel: witness to a momentous event

With its centuries-old history and artistic splendour, the Sistine Chapel stands as a powerful symbol of the Catholic Church’s enduring continuity. It is a place where past and present converge, where tradition is continually renewed, and where faith reveals itself in its fullest expression.

Every Conclave held within its walls is an event of profound global significance, capturing the attention of the entire world. As a silent witness to this ancient ritual, the Sistine Chapel continues to inspire and captivate, offering a message of hope and unity that transcends geographical and cultural divides.

When will the next Conclave be held?

In 2025, a Jubilee Year, the Conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, 21 April, at the age of 88, will also take place. Following the funeral, the Pontiff will be laid to rest in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. The Conclave is expected to begin between 5 and 10 May, in accordance with the liturgical requirement that it be held between the fifteenth and twentieth day after the death of the successor of Peter.
