Piedmont is one of the few Italian regions that does not border the sea, along with Valle d’Aosta, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige and Umbria. For those living in Turin who enjoy spending their summer holidays by the sea, travelling is a must to reach the coast and its seaside resorts.

The nearest coastline to Turin lies in Liguria, a region renowned both in Italy and abroad for its natural beauty, clear waters, charming seaside villages and rich culinary traditions. But which beaches and coastal towns are the easiest to reach from Turin?

Beachside destinations in the province of Savona

The closest stretch of coast to Turin is in the province of Savona. Among the most beautiful, and quickest to reach, beaches are the following three:

• Varigotti beach: a hamlet of the municipality of Finale Ligure, lies 146 km from Turin and can be reached by train in about two and a half hours. Located on the Riviera di Ponente, it boasts a long shoreline perfect for leisurely walks. The sea is crystal clear and, as a traditional fishing village, Varigotti is also known for its charming seafront lined with colourful houses.
• Baia delle Sirene in Bergeggi: is located 148 km from Turin. Nestled within the Bergeggi Regional Nature Park and facing the small island of the same name, this beach features clear, blue waters and dark pebbles. The surrounding village is steeped in history, with medieval religious and military buildings adding to its appeal.
• Alassio beach: around 184 km from the capital of Piedmont, is one of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers. It boasts one of the longest stretches of coastline in the area, with four kilometres of sandy beach known for its distinctive golden hue. Thanks to its shallow waters and wide range of amenities, it is particularly well-suited to families with young children and to those looking for comfort and relaxation.

Other Ligurian beaches close to Turin

Beyond the coastal resorts around Savona, several other Ligurian seaside destinations lie within easy reach of Turin. All of the following can be reached by car or train in around two and a half to three hours:

• San Fruttuoso beach, Camogli (Province of Genoa): a small, pebbly beach with crystal-clear waters, San Fruttuoso lies within the Portofino Regional Natural Park. Nestled in a secluded bay, it offers visitors the chance to explore the historic abbey, the charming village and its tiny harbour.
• Sestri Levante beach (near Genoa): famous for its striking landscape, Sestri Levante boasts two distinct beaches separated by a promontory: the romantically named Bay of Silence and Bay of Fables. Both offer beautiful views and a relaxed beachside atmosphere.
• Monterosso beach, Cinque Terre (Province of La Spezia): the largest beach in the Cinque Terre, Monterosso’s sandy shoreline is ideal for sunbathing and swimming. As one of the five picturesque villages in the area, it also serves as a great starting point for hiking along scenic coastal trails or exploring hidden coves by boat.
• Levanto beach (Province of La Spezia): just outside the Cinque Terre National Park, Levanto is a traditional Ligurian town with a wide, sandy beach and breezy conditions ideal for surfing. Its laid-back charm and close proximity to the Cinque Terre make it a popular choice for travellers seeking both nature and authenticity.
