5 July 2021 marks a sorrowful anniversary: the passing of Raffaella Carrà, an unforgettable artist and an icon of Italian entertainment. As we remember her, we take a glimpse into her cherished retreat in Argentario and her deep affection for Tuscany.

Raffaella Carrà’s love for Tuscany and the Argentario

Raffaella Carrà often spent her holidays in Tuscany, retreating to her coastal home. Her chosen haven was Porto Santo Stefano, where she owned a stunning villa perched on the promontory, known as Villa di Cala Piccola.

Inside Raffaella Carrà’s seaside Villa

This elegant and prestigious villa blends seamlessly into the scenic landscape of the Argentario. Located directly opposite the Island of Giglio, it lies approximately 7 km from the quaint fishing village.

The multi-level property is surrounded by an extensive, manicured lawn, featuring ample parking space and a private helipad.

Although little is publicly known about the villa’s interiors, it is believed to include a spacious living room with panoramic sea views, mahogany parquet flooring interspersed with ceramic tiles, and a terrace with a dedicated barbecue area.

An infinity pool, perfectly positioned to overlook the coastline, catches the sunlight and reflects the shimmering hues of the sea, an unmissable highlight of the property.

Argentario: what to see and do

The Argentario is a striking promontory in the province of Grosseto, connected to the mainland via the town of Orbetello and two natural sandbars, Giannella and Feniglia, both long, picturesque beaches known as tomboli.

When referring to the Argentario, one speaks not only of the mountain, Monte Argentario, but also of two renowned seaside destinations, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. These charming coastal towns have long been favoured by artists, including Renato Zero and Raffaella Carrà.

With its mild climate and breathtaking landscapes, the Argentario attracts visitors year-round. Beyond its pristine Tyrrhenian beaches, the region is also a prime destination for trekking and mountain biking, offering a network of trails winding through Mediterranean scrubland, reaching elevations of up to 635 metres.

Porto Santo Stefano

Porto Santo Stefano is the largest and most important tourist hub of Monte Argentario, serving as the main departure point for ferries to the island of Giglio.

Visitors can explore the historic town centre and enjoy a stroll along the charming pedestrian promenade leading to the marina.

Porto Ercole

Smaller and more intimate than Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole is nestled on the opposite side of the promontory. Its picturesque harbour, lined with moored yachts and private boats, adds to its exclusive allure.

Among its must-see sights is the historic village, perched on higher ground and offering panoramic views. The settlement is encircled by the bastion of Santa Barbara and the striking Palazzo dei Governanti, a 16th-century landmark.
