All the homes of Robert Redford: where the Oscar-winning actor lived

Robert Redford, the American screen legend and star of such landmark films as All the President’s Men, The Sting, Out of Africa and Indecent Proposal, has died aged 89. Over his long career he won two Oscars: Best Director for Ordinary People in 1981 and an Honorary Award in 2002, though the coveted Best Actor statuette eluded him.

Born in Santa Monica, California, on 18 August 1936, Redford remained deeply attached to Utah, where he spent much of his life and where he passed away peacefully on 16 September 2025.

Robert Redford’s Homes

Redford was not only an acclaimed actor and director but also a passionate advocate for the environment and independent cinema. The homes he chose reflect this commitment: quiet retreats, often surrounded by nature and designed to encourage creativity and community.

Sundance, Utah

In the 1960s, Redford bought the first acres of what would become Sundance Mountain Resort, transforming the area into a cultural hub for artists, filmmakers and mountain enthusiasts. His private estate included rustic wooden chalets, eco-friendly facilities and studios for workshops. Sundance remained Redford’s signature residence and the heart of his cultural projects right up until his death.

Horse Whisper Ranch, Utah

Just a few miles from Sundance lies Horse Whisper Ranch, 30 acres of pastures, waterways and stables. The property, whose name nods to Redford’s 1998 film The Horse Whisperer, was recently listed for sale.

Sibylle Szaggars Redford’s Cabin, Utah

Redford’s wife, artist Sibylle Szaggars, once owned a small cabin in the mountains near Sundance, later sold in recent years. Photographs published at the time revealed a cosy retreat, designed for reflection and in harmony with the couple’s philosophy of slow living.

The Coastal Home in California

One of Redford’s favourite short-stay retreats was a minimalist coastal home overlooking the Pacific. Purchased in 2020 for $3.1 million, the couple sold it in 2024 for $4.15 million.

The Former Residence in Connecticut

For a period, Redford also lived on the East Coast, in a historic house in Weston, Connecticut, which was eventually sold.
