It was 2002 when George Clooney was forced to stop in the village of Laglio, on Lake Como, when his motorbike broke down.

The handsome actor had a difficult time, but in the end this small inconvenience turned out to be a stroke of luck: while he was waiting for the tow truck, he happened to notice a majestic Art Nouveau villa, which he immediately decided to buy.

Since then, the American star has spent his summers (pandemic permitting) at Villa Oleandra.

The history of Villa Oleandra

Nestled between the green of the mountains and the blue of the lake, Villa Oleandra was built in 1720 on a site probably inhabited since Roman times.

The current complex dates back to 1834, when the Stoppani family merged several buildings to create a single, sumptuous residence which then passed to the Antogini family and then to other owners until John Heinz, the inventor of ketchup, sold it to George Clooney in 2002 for 10 million euros.

What George Clooney’s Holiday Home Looks Like

All we know about the interior is that it mixes modern and classic styles, and that the master bedroom features an elegant four-poster bed, while we have some quite detailed information about the outside, which consists of a beautiful garden with flowers, trees and above all, high hedges that guarantee privacy.

In the green area, connected by a bridge to another residence purchased by Clooney more recently, Villa Margherita, there is an ancient fountain, a tennis court, an in-ground swimming pool and even a private pizzeria.

How much is Villa Oleandra worth?

Rumours, also based on the staggering sums spent on other properties in the area (including a villa owned by a Russian oligarch and is now in foreclosure) suggest that Villa Oleandra could now be worth ten times more than George Clooney paid for it 20 years ago: if the calculations are correct, we are talking about 100 million euros.
