Have you ever planned a last-minute getaway to the beautiful Amalfi Coast or a weekend in Naples to sample the world’s most authentic pizza? If so, you have probably stopped at one of the airports in Campania.

But how many airports are there in this region? Here’s a quick tour of Campania’s airports.

Airports in Campania

Located in the heart of southern Italy, the Campania region is one of the most popular destinations for Italian and international tourists, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, its splendid coastline and its renowned gastronomy.

One of the fundamental aspects for the flow of tourists and the movement of residents is the airport infrastructure. In Campania there are two main airports: Naples-Capodichino airport and the brand-new Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi airport. Let’s discover them together.

Naples Capodichino Airport (Naples International Airport)

Naples Capodichino Airport is the main airport in the region and is one of the most important airports in southern Italy. Located about 7 km from the centre of Naples, it is easily accessible from the city and surrounding areas.

Managed by Gesac SpA, it is classified as an international airport and serves a wide catchment area. Capodichino offers a broad range of national and international flights, connecting Campania with numerous European and world destinations. In 2023, the airport recorded a flow of millions of passengers thanks to its strategic location and the growing demand for travel to Naples and surrounding areas, such as the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Capri.

Capodichino is served by a large number of airlines, including Alitalia, Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air, and is equipped with a wide range of services and facilities to ensure a comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Salerno-Amalfi Coast Airport

Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi Airport is the second largest airport in the region, located between the municipalities of Pontecagnano Faiano and Bellizzi, about 20 km from Salerno. This airport has a more recent history than Naples-Capodichino and is mainly used for private flights and general aviation. However, expansion plans are underway to make it a more important hub for commercial and tourist traffic.

Thanks to its strategic location near the Amalfi Coast, Cilento and tourist destinations such as Paestum and Agropoli, Salerno airport could become an important gateway for tourists wishing to avoid the traffic and chaos of Naples. The expansion and modernisation of the runway, along with the opening of new commercial routes, have been the subject of investment and projects in recent years, with the aim of decongesting Capodichino and providing an efficient alternative for travellers.

Prospects for the future

The presence of these two airports makes Campania a well-connected region by air, although there is still room for future development, especially with regard to Salerno airport.

With the increase in tourism and the growing demand for fast connections to Campania’s most popular destinations, it is likely that the region will continue to invest in airport infrastructure.
