Sardinia has three main airports, located in different geographical areas to cover the entire region: Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero.

The distribution of these ports makes it easy to reach different tourist destinations, from the Costa Smeralda to the south-west coast.

Cagliari Elmas Airport

Cagliari Elmas Airport, officially called Mario Mameli Airport in honour of the Italian aviator, has a 2,804 metre runway and is the main airport in Sardinia, located about 7 kilometres from the centre of Cagliari, in the municipality of Elmas.

It is well connected to numerous Italian and European destinations, thanks to a wide range of national and international flights operated by scheduled and low-cost airlines.

The airport’s location allows for easy access to a wide range of destinations by various means of transport. Regular bus services run to and from the airport, while a train station located a short distance from the terminal allows passengers to reach Cagliari and other destinations on the island quickly and efficiently. Convenient road links, such as the SS131, provide easy access to the main seaside resorts in southern Sardinia, including Pula, Chia and Villasimius.

The modern structure of Cagliari airport has been expanded and renovated in recent years to cope with the increase in passenger traffic. Inside the terminal there are many services including shops, restaurants, bars, ATMs, currency exchange and car hire desks.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, located about 4 kilometres south-east of Olbia city centre, in the north-east of the island, is the second largest airport in Sardinia. It is an international airport and serves as the main gateway for the many visitors heading to the island’s most exclusive tourist destinations, such as Porto Cervo and Santa Teresa di Gallura.

Olbia Airport takes its name from the Costa Smeralda, one of the most famous tourist destinations in Italy and Europe, and is served by several airlines, both scheduled and low-cost. It mainly operates seasonal flights, especially during the summer months when air traffic increases significantly.

The airport is well connected to the centre of Olbia and other destinations in Gallura. There are regular bus services to the main tourist resorts. For those travelling by car, the Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport can be reached via the SS125 and the SS729, with both short and long term parking available.

Alghero-Fertilia Airport

Alghero-Fertilia Airport, also known as Riviera del Corallo Airport, is located in the north-western part of Sardinia, about 10 kilometres from the city of Alghero, in the hamlet of Fertilia.

It is a cheaper alternative to Olbia airport. In fact, low-cost airlines operate from here, offering cheaper fares throughout the year.

Despite its small size (it is the smallest of the three airports), Alghero airport is modern, equipped with all the necessary services for travellers, and well connected by bus to the main towns in the area. For those who prefer to travel by car, the airport is easily accessible via the SS291 and SS127bis.
