The Mystery of the Devil’s Ascent in Ariccia, the “downhill ascent” that defies gravity

One of the most curious natural phenomena in Lazio is the Salita del Diavolo (Devil’s Ascent) in Ariccia, which seems to defy gravity. Here's what it's all about.

The Devil’s Ascent, along the State Road 218 near Ariccia, is a place known for a curious physical phenomenon that seems to defy logic. Objects left unattended along this stretch of road seem to move uphill, just as cars themselves, when left in neutral, seem to move upwards against all expectations.

For decades, this effect has attracted the attention of residents, visitors, curious people, enthusiasts of unusual phenomena and scholars, fuelling legends and myths rather than scientific explanations.

The scientific explanation of the phenomenon

Despite the visual impact and perceptual effect, there is no violation of the laws of physics.

The “Devil’s Ascent” is the result of an optical illusion, as confirmed by several studies conducted on similar phenomena. The configuration of the terrain, combined with a partially obscured horizon, causes the human brain to perceive a slight descent as an ascent.

The brain interprets the slope of the terrain based on visual references. In the absence of clear reference points, human perception can be easily deceived. In the case of the Devil’s Ascent, the actual slope of the road is downhill, but the surrounding context leads to an opposite interpretation.

The influence of legends on the site

Whatever the scientific explanation, the allure of the Devil’s Ascent has been reinforced by local legends. The proximity of some important places, such as Monte Cavo and the Via Sacra, where extra-terrestrials were reported to have been seen, or the former Convent of Palazzola, the scene of some black masses in the 1980s, has contributed to the creation in the collective imagination of several tales of ancient cults, religious mysteries and esoteric stories.

According to some traditions, the road was a place of passage for pagan rites, while others claim that magnetic forces somehow linked to the volcanic origin of the site or “diabolical” influences can explain the phenomenon.

The scientific and cultural context

The Devil’s Ascent is not an isolated case; similar phenomena have been recorded in various other Italian regions. In Abruzzo, for example, in the Gran Sasso area, there are known phenomena of anomalous acoustics, where sounds seem to move erratically, creating the illusion that the noise comes from a different direction than the real one.

In Tuscany, in the area of the Pisan Hills, there are cases of perspective illusions similar to those of the Salita del Diavolo, where the landscape seems to tilt or deform in an extraordinary way, creating the visual effect that people or objects on the road seem be moving against gravity. Finally, in Sicily, in the area of the Iblei Mountains, there are known phenomena of visual distortion that occur in the deep valleys, where the landscape seems to change shape depending on the angle from which it is observed.
