The Topolini of Trieste are a series of small seaside bathing establishments nestled along the Riviera di Barcola, a coastal district north of the city. These artificial beaches feature small circular structures, seamlessly integrated into the landscape and designed with the local community in mind.

Shape and structure of the Topolini: the origin of the name

The origin of the name of these coastal structures appears to stem from two possible explanations:

The first suggests that it derives from their peculiar shape, which resembles the ears of a famous cartoon character. The second, rooted in local maritime tradition, proposes that it comes from Topo, the name of a boat originally from the Venetian lagoon, widely used in the waters off Barcola.

These distinctive buildings were designed in the 1930s by architect Umberto Nordio in a fully rationalist style. Initially, in 1935, the Municipality of Trieste decided to construct four “Topolini,” each featuring semicircular terraces, two designated for men and two for women.

Built at a lower level than the street, these structures were positioned to ensure they did not obstruct the surrounding landscape. To improve accessibility, Trieste introduced a dedicated bus service connecting them to the municipal bathing facilities.

How have the Topolini evolved over time?

After the construction of the first four structures and their resounding success, the Municipality decided to continue with the project, completing the remaining six pavilions. Today, the entire complex of ten Topolini has transformed the Trieste coastline into an inclusive, public, and free-access bathing area.

Over the years, several changes have been introduced, particularly concerning safety and accessibility. The Topolini are now equipped with access ramps leading both to the platforms and directly into the sea, as well as bathrooms fitted with emergency alarm bells.

Two of the Topolini feature pebble beaches and are primarily frequented by mothers, children, and the elderly, while the others, which provide sea access via ladders, tend to attract a younger crowd.
