Lazio’s airport system plays a strategic role not only for the region, but also for the entire country. The presence of several airports in Lazio, each with a specific vocation and function, represents an important engine of economic development and a central hub in the national and international transport network.

The main airports of Lazio: Fiumicino and Ciampino

Lazio’s airports include two main commercial airports: Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino and Ciampino Airport. Fiumicino is the main Italian hub and one of the most important intercontinental airports. In 2019, it recorded over 43 million passengers, confirming its position as the busiest airport in Italy .

Managed by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), Fiumicino offers national, international and intercontinental connections, and hosts the main national and low-cost airlines.

Ciampino, on the other hand, is mainly used by low-cost airlines and is a preferred option for short-haul European flights.

Military and secondary airports in Lazio

In addition to the two main airports, Lazio has numerous smaller military and civil airports that complete the regional air transport network. These include the military airports of Viterbo, Latina, Frosinone, Furbara, Pratica di Mare and Guidonia, which are mainly used for military and civil protection purposes .

There are also the airports of Rieti and Aquino, which are used for private and recreational flights, as and Rome Urbe airport, located to the north of the capital, and is used for air taxi flights, civil protection and services related to the Aeroclub.

Future projects: the third airport of Frosinone

In response to the growing needs of air traffic management, the debate on the creation of a third commercial airport in Lazio has recently been reopened. The Associazione Progetto Aeroporto di Roma-Frosinone (APARF) has promoted the development of a new airport in the city of Frosinone, which could be a viable alternative to relieve congestion at Ciampino.

The infrastructure would be designed in line with the sustainability objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the European Union’s infrastructure development policy, making it a strategic resource for the area.
