Even though it is no longer in operation, Rome-Centocelle holds a special place among Italy’s airports as it is the oldest in the country. Founded in 1909, it marked the beginning of the history of flight in Italy, playing a fundamental role in the development of aeronautical technologies and the first air routes.

The pioneering beginnings of Italian aviation

At Centocelle airport, the first attempts at flight were made by the pioneers of Italian aviation. Among them, the name of Mario Calderara stands out, as he was the first Italian to obtain a pilot’s licence in 1909. The first airport structures were very simple and consisted mainly of wooden hangars and grass runways, although they were already a garrison for the most advanced technologies at the time. According to historical sources, the airport was officially inaugurated in 1909 and was used for the first time by Wilbur Wright during a demonstration of his Flyer aircraft to Italian military officials.

Strategic importance during the world wars

With the outbreak of the First World War, Centocelle became a nerve centre for the training of military pilots. The airport was expanded and modernised to meet the needs of the war, becoming an important strategic base. During the Second World War, Centocelle continued to play a crucial role, not only as an operational base, but also as a centre for the development and testing of new military aircraft.

Post-war transformation

In the post-war period, Centocelle airport underwent a series of transformations. With the expansion of Rome and the development of new airports, such as Fiumicino and Ciampino, Centocelle gradually lost its central role in civil and military aviation. However, its historical importance remained undisputed and today it is a symbol of Italy’s aeronautical heritage.

The present and future of Centocelle

Currently, Centocelle Airport is home to the Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare, which preserves and celebrates Italy’s long aeronautical tradition. The museum displays a vast collection of historic aircraft, documents and artefacts that testify to the evolution of aviation in the country. It also hosts events and demonstrations aimed at promoting aeronautical culture among new generations.

Rome-Centocelle Airport is therefore a true living monument to the history of flight in the country. Its legacy continues to inspire and remind us of the importance of technological progress and the courage of aviation pioneers.
