In total, if we take into account commercial airports, those used for civil traffic, those used exclusively for military purposes and the others that combine (to a greater or lesser extent) all three functions, we can list 112 airports in Italy.

Of these, only 14 are used for military and police purposes, while the remaining 98 are used for passenger traffic, of which 42 are used for the loading and unloading of goods. However, there are two regions in Italy that do not have an airport. Let’s find out which ones they are.

Regions without airports: Molise

The first of the two Italian regions without an airport is Molise. This means that the region, whose capital is Campobasso, does not currently have an airport where a flight can land.

In fact, none of the 136 municipalities that make up the two provinces of Isernia and Campobasso allow their citizens to board a scheduled flight reserved for civil traffic. Similarly, there are no military or freight airports.

Basilicata, the other region without an airport

An addition to Molise, there is Basilicata, a region with no civil, military or commercial airport. Neither Matera nor Potenza, the other provincial capital of Basilicata, has an airport that allows citizens to travel by air from their place of residence.
