Chitignano (AR) è un piccolo borgo di montagna, situato lungo la strada che porta a Chiusi della Verna, con una rinomata fama di antica stazione termale fin dal Medioevo, grazie alle presenza di sorgenti di acque solforico-ferruginose, ideali per alleviare le fatiche dei pellegrini in transito.
La sua posizione di paese di confine, nascosto tra boschi e montagne, favorì nel tempo le attività di contrabbando tipiche di questo territorio - tabacco e polvere da sparo - a tal punto che il Granducato arrivò a riconoscere alla zona una sorta di “regime fiscale privilegiato”, per consentire e agevolare tali attività. Le cose cambiarono poi con l'Unità d'Italia.
