La sua posizione di paese di confine, nascosto tra boschi e montagne, favorì nel tempo le attività di contrabbando tipiche di questo territorio - tabacco e polvere da sparo - a tal punto che il Granducato arrivò a riconoscere alla zona una sorta di “regime fiscale privilegiato”, per consentire e agevolare tali attività.
