Finalborgo, one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy", is a jewel a few steps from the sea that enchants with its atmosphere of other times. The name derives from Burgum Finarii, borderland (ad fines) in Roman times and administrative center of the Del Carretto marquisate between the 14th and 16th centuries. Enclosed within still well-preserved medieval walls, interspersed with semicircular towers and interrupted only at the gates, the Borgo di Finale (so called to distinguish it from the Marina) immediately offers the visitor a feeling of protection and concentration. The ancient defensive and community concept survives in the grid of streets, arranged perpendicularly to each other to form fascinating views in contained spaces. Traveling through the narrow alleys, each square is a conquest and a surprise, able to exhibit marvels in the "Finale stone", the slate that adorns gates, is modeled into columns, diamonds, ornaments.

With the boundary walls (destroyed in 1448 and rebuilt in 1452), the various "gates": Porta Reale (from 1702 next to which it is possible to see a large embossed coat of arms of the Del Carrettos), Porta Romana, Porta Testa (from 1452) and Porta Mezzaluna (higher up towards Forte San Giovanni), the semicircular towers that occasionally interrupted the walls (the most beautiful is visible on the south side), the Borgo retains the characteristics of a fortified settlement in its fifteenth-century structure, posterior to the destruction following the war with Genoa (1448). The fifteenth-century and Renaissance palaces, modified during the period of Spanish domination, embellish the urban fabric.
