Arpino is one of the oldest and most important cultural and artistic centers of the province. The city develops on the left side of the middle valley of the Liri river, on a hilly system at an altitude of about 450 m a.s.l. The center is dominated by the acropolis called Civitavecchia (650 m). The Roman lawyer, politician and philosopher Marco Tullio Cicerone was born in Arpino in 106 BC; his city was often mentioned in his works; in modern times his name has been given to the main avenue of the city, to the Tulliano national boarding school, to the medieval tower of the acropolis and to various other institutions.
