Apartment via Pia, Centro Storico, Savona

A PIECE OF HISTORY IN THE HEART OF SAVONA IN PALAZZO SANSONI THE HISTORICAL RESIDENCE THAT HOST POPE PIO VII
In Via Pia, in the stretch close to the Brandale Tower, there is a place of great historical importance for Savona.
We enter Palazzo Sansoni , medieval building dating back to the XIII century; the building was renovated between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and in the Napoleonic era it was the residence of the mayor of the city. The large apartment we present, located on the first floor of the building, hosted Pope Pius VII (1800-1823) during his imprisonment in Savona. The very large apartment, about 400 square meters, is made up of an atrium, a very large hall of over 80 square meters, some large rooms, a chapel and an attic room. The atrium is very simple, it is divided into two rooms each opened by two doors, surmounted by oval niches containing marble busts of bishops. The atrium leads to the richest and most sumptuous room, the great hall, whose appearance has changed a lot since the time of Pius VII. It has a splendid Venetian floor, the walls and the octagonal ceiling are entirely decorated with decorative stuccos. The walls are divided by Ionic columns and opened by frames richly edged in stucco, inside which there were imposing canvases and today there are ceramic panels by Francesco Lottero, in white-blue or polychrome "laggioni", depicting views of the city . At the center of the large reception wall there is a marble fireplace decorated inside and on the part above, with smooth "laggioni" and "cuenca". From the room inside the porch you can enjoy a beautiful glimpse of via Pia and from this room you can access other rooms, two very simple ones overlook via Orefici next to them a historic chapel richly decorated with stuccos. An internal staircase leads to the attic which highlights the structure of the barrel ceilings. The rooms located on the left side of the hall are the least decorated and overlook via Sansoni. The accommodation is undoubtedly a piece of the history of Savona and each renovation must follow the restoration rules designed to include it in a process of enhancement of what represents an integral part of the historical and artistic heritage of the city.
