Camogli:
certainly of ancient origin, but of uncertain etymology and there are different currents of thought on the meaning of the word itself. Numerous scholars derive the word from Camulo or Camulio, name attributed to the divinity Mars by the Sabines and Etruscans, or from Camolio, a Gallo-Celtic divinity. Other studies believe that the word is of Greek-Ligurian origin and means "earth below" from "cam" (below) and "gi" (earth). This translation would coincide with the topographical characteristic of the village, downstream from the Rua (Ruta).
Current scholars perhaps erroneously no longer accept the theory of the nineteenth-century historian, the Marquis Serra, according to which Camogli was identified with the distant Casmona founded by the Ligurian Casmonati. In fact, the theory of the alleged remoteness of Casmona founders in the face of refutations which find Casmona indicating the island on which the castle of Dragonara still stands today (with the slavish denomination of Casmonati assumed by the inhabitants of the place around 1200), and Ricina as the denomination of the nearby town of Recco.
