We offer for sale a 16th century period building, developed on several levels, covering over 600 square meters in the historic center, located on the ancient city walls.
The building was built by the Celestine Friars - who had just settled in Mesagne - as a convent adjacent to the ancient church of San Bartolomeo and, subsequently, in the early 1600s, the convent was purchased by Baron Rini – from whom the street in which the building is located takes its name – making it his permanent residence. In the meantime, however, the Celestines founded their new convent next to the current Church of Santa Maria in Betlem. proximity to what is known as “la scaledda” to the people of Mesagnesi.
The building looks like an imposing rectangular block with a main facade punctuated by regular windows, each equipped with small wrought iron balconies, and a majestic wooden door. Upon accessing it, we find ourselves in the barrel-vaulted entrance that leads off the rooms on the ground floor: originally service rooms, these rooms are also mostly barrel-vaulted and equipped with bathrooms. The rooms are generous in size: one of these also has independent access on via Rini, another is intended as a guest room with private bathroom and the other two large multipurpose rooms are to be used, possibly, as a library or study.
The The entrance then leads us to the entrance hall main staircase: a coat of arms found during the restoration work has been preserved and inserted in the walls of this room, representing a flamingo with a bean plant and supposedly made to bring good omens and health to patients admitted to the convent.
The monumental staircase, which connects the ground floor to the first floor, is embellished with wrought iron decorations and an important window from which you can access the internal courtyard with a centuries-old citrus grove (already mentioned in the ancient Mesagnese writings) of 125 square meters, the very few still existing in the historical centre. Once, in this area, the ancient church adjoining the convent stood.
On the first floor, the large reception hall with a double corner vault, about seven meters high from the floor, appears in all its majesty and opens up the whole living area formed by the living room, dining room and kitchen (also connected so as to form a characteristic enfilade of rooms all facing the main road). Each room, with the exception of the kitchen and the adjacent utility room, is characterized by vaulted ceilings typical of Salento architecture.
Particular attention should be paid to the bedrooms (each with its own private bathroom), where you can admire the mastery of the 17th century craftsmen in every detail: especially in the so-called "hanging sky" vault of the master bedroom, whose decorations with relief floral motifs, made of plaster, suggest it could have been used by the prior or intended as a chapel private to the convent.
The entire terrace at the level of about 50 square meters which rests on the ancient city walls and guarantees a very private view of the Dominican church ends.
