Historical notes: The first mention of Brandula occurs in 1001 in reference to the church of the Blessed Virgin. During the same century, the castle was built and became an important cornerstone of the defensive system of the Da Gomola committee, a family of Lombard origin, who swore loyalty to the Municipality of Modena. Later, in the 13th century, Brandola became one of the centers of the Ghibelline resistance against the Guelphs. In 1265 the Grasolfi, Ghibellines from Modena, barricaded themselves in the castle where they withstood a three-day siege by the Guelph troops. In 1268, in a further violent battle, the Ghibellines were forced to surrender by the Guelphs, who dug two tunnels under the tower, with the aim of making it collapse, and finally destroyed the fortress. Immediately rebuilt, the Brandola castle played a fundamental role in the rebellion against the Marquis Azzo d'Este, giving asylum to the rebels who gave life to the Modenese Republic in 1306. During the 1330s Brandola passed to the Montecuccoli family who held possession of it until 1408 , when the fiefdom was assigned to the Pio family of Carpi. A peculiarity of the Brandola area is an ancient source of sulphurous water discovered in 1448 and easily reachable from the castle via a suggestive route surrounded by nature. For centuries it was considered by the populations of the area to be curative and miraculous, so much so that it was marketed after bottling.
