San Venanzo is an Italian town of 2,170 inhabitants in the province of Terni in Umbria. It is the 15th Umbrian municipality by extension, with a total area of over 169,000 hectares.
The presence of man in the area is confirmed by the discovery of artifacts dating back to the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, along the course of the Calvana and Fersinone streams. Now these remains are kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Perugia. Even the Etruscans have left consistent traces of their presence. The origins of the town of San Venanzo date back to the Byzantine era, around the eighth century.
The particular location of this geographical area, between Orvieto, Perugia and Todi, was one of the main causes, during the communal era, of numerous local wars. Starting from the year 1290 San Venanzo belonged to the Monaldeschi of Orvieto and followed their fate until the domination of the Church (16th century). San Venanzo remained included in the territory of Orvieto until 1929, when it became an independent municipality incorporating the municipality of San Vito. The richness of the village, however, is given by its uncontaminated natural environment, among the most suggestive in the region. Of great naturalistic interest is the Parco dei Sette Frati, located near the top of Mount Peglia: the green area hosts a protected wildlife reserve and the Flora and Fauna Documentation Center of Mount Peglia. In this area, 265,000 years ago, one of the 3 'bonsai' volcanoes identified by recent studies was active, which also allowed the development of educational-environmental tourism with the opening of the Volcanological Park and Museum in 1999. Pearl of the Museum it is venanzite, a unique volcanic rock of its kind in the world that can be observed on site in an ancient quarry, which is the fulcrum of the Volcanological Park, a veritable open-air museum. Volcanic remains are also present in the bed of the Fersinone stream, which digs a deep gorge that stretches up to the Valnestore in Morcella, in the municipality of Marsciano. The Etruscan presence along the course of the Fersinone is also well documented, in particular at Poggio Aquilone, where Etruscan funerary remains have been found.
Monuments and places of interest
Among its most representative buildings is Villa Faina, which has long been the seat of the Municipality. Furthermore, every year, the homonymous park hosts the free-entrance music festival Incanto d'Estate, which has seen numerous Italian artists of national importance perform. Among the hamlets, there are the villages of Rotecastello, Pornello and Collelungo.
