In the 19th century, the Bartolomuccis managed an important paper mill in the territory of the municipality of Picinisco, in a locality now called Borgo Castellone.
The first historical information on this plant indicates how its foundation took place around 1630, on a specific project by the Duke of Alvito, Francesco Gallio; but we have to wait for the beginning of the 19th century to have other indications, which testify to its expansion on the wave of the entrepreneurial success of the contemporary Paper Mill of Fibreno in Isola Liri.
The factory in question must have immediately begun to bear fruit, given that in the first quarter of the 19th century the owners, the Bartolomucci brothers, began complex and onerous works to expand the factory by building a new building. The establishment had latest generation machines with which more than twenty different types of paper were produced, for the sale of which a warehouse (fondaco) was purchased in the center of Naples. There were also homes for the 64 workers (32 women and 32 men) who were educated by French personnel, who also lodged in the paper mill, and also for the factory director Lorenzo Montgolfier, from the family of the inventor of the balloon. In 1828 due to the distance from the consular road which required expensive transport of materials on the back of a mule, the Bartolomuccis asked for the construction of a road from Picinisco to Atina; these improvement works reach their peak when the Bartolomucci paper mill becomes a supplier to the Ministry of the Interior and is considered the best paper mill in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This state of affairs in which production proceeded more than satisfactorily until around 1870, when half of the Bartolomucci property was purchased by the Visocchi, owners of the Atina paper mill; this new double ownership seems to give further life to the paper mill, which employs 90 workers between 1876 and 1890 and is unable to satisfy all market demands.
In the years between the 19th and 20th centuries, on the wave was taking place in Europe, new raw materials for Italy such as wood pulp and cellulose began to be adopted, which required a radical renewal of technologies for which not all companies were prepared. Perhaps also for these reasons, in 1896 the Cartiera Bartolomucci began a slow but inexorable decline. In 1906 the Bartolomuccis left the property, selling the other half of the factory to the Visocchis.
The history of our paper mill reaches the present day when, in 1984, it was taken over by private individuals, and its premises, including the pertinent mill, were converted into apartments.--185f8aeeb8e2950bc86e9fbdb5192729!
