The old city has essentially kept its urban layout unchanged.
It has characteristics of extraordinary interest; it is a continuous overlapping of building structures from various periods and from different cultural backgrounds.

The island is entirely surrounded by a bastioned wall, which develops for a length of about one and a half kilometres; after the massacre of Otranto by the Turks (1480) and the first half of the following century, the city in fact worked on the construction of defensive structures able to face the continuous attacks of enemies.
