The Casallia Castle is located in the municipal area of Castiglione della Pescaia, in the locality of Le Case di Vetulonia , a few kilometers downstream from the center of the same name.
The castle was built around the year one thousand as a convent structure which, over time, was abandoned by the monks and transformed into a fortified structure.
The original complex depended on the nearby Abbey of Sestinga and, following its abandonment, it was purchased by local lords who transformed it into their residence and accepted submission to Siena starting from 1331. With the fall of Siena in the second half of the sixteenth century, the castle was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, while always remaining private property.
From the eighteenth century onwards, a series of renovations that continued until the last century largely modified the original medieval appearance.
The Castle of Casallia stands on a small plateau and it is made up of a cluster of residential buildings arranged around the tower.
Today most of the buildings are the result of evident restoration interventions which took place in recent times, despite having maintained the stone wall structures.
However, their particular layout highlights the original functions of the convent, making it easy to imagine the location of the ancient church and what the structures used as cells were.
