Tuglie has very ancient origins. This is confirmed by the four "Menhirs" of Tuglia found in the open countryside: the menhir of "Monte Prino", about two meters high; the menhir of the "nine crosses" in the "Camastra" district; the menhir which is located at the intersection of the "Caruggio" local street with the "Camastra" local street; the menhir of the "Scirocco" estate, on the border between the Santese and Losavio estates. Of particular interest are the "Passaturi Caves" or "Old Houses", located near the elementary schools, which, according to some scholars, constituted the home of the ancient people of the "Tulli" (1).
Around 1270, the small the inhabited nucleus, which arose spontaneously close to the hill, was called "Casale Tulli" and belonged to Almerico di Montedragone, an officer in the army of Charles of Anjou. The sovereign had given it to the noble knight in exchange for some goods located in the territory of Sulmona, Almerico's hometown (2). In 1280, the Count of Montedragone had to rush to Taranto to quell a popular revolt. Gervaso da Matino took advantage of his absence and forcibly occupied the Tuglie farmhouse, renaming it "Castri Tulli" (3).
It is said that Almerico, before leaving the farmhouse, had a small chapel built in the place where there had previously been a stone niche with the image of the Holy Souls, right where the Mother Church dedicated to the Madonna dell'Annunziata now stands (4).
On 28 July 1480, a formidable fleet of Turkish galleys with 1,600 artillery pieces and 18,000 soldiers, lined up in front of the port of Otranto. Acmet, the leader of the Turks, promised advantageous conditions in exchange for surrender, but the people of Otranto decided to resist to the bitter end. Thus began a very violent siege, which lasted 15 days. The Ottoman artillery bombarded the walls, the town and the fortress. Then the Turks, having overwhelmed all resistance, swept into the city, putting it on fire. The siege ended on August 11: many citizens died in the fighting. Three days later, Acmet, on the Minerva Hill, invited the survivors to convert to Islam, but the people of Otranto refused, facing martyrdom. The bodies of the eight hundred martyrs were not buried but abandoned on the spot, where they remained until the liberation of the city. After the occupation of Otranto, the Ottoman hordes carried out terrible raids throughout Salento, sacking and destroying villages, towns and churches. The Tuglie farmhouse was also razed to the ground, despite the resistance organized by the Tulli and the inhabitants of Paravita in the cave called Fra' Nicola, named after the friar who led the fight against the Turks (5). For a long time the fiefdom of Tuglie remained abandoned and lifeless, so much so that the feudal lords, having no vassals under their control, could not exercise any property rights. Since no one took care of cultivating the land, the appearance of abundant spontaneous vegetation was inevitable. In the Passaturi district, around the Tulli farm, thuja trees grew in large numbers. According to an ancient legend, precisely because of the presence of these plants, belonging to the conifer family, the small inhabited centre, which arose around the baronial palace, was called Tuglie--b27ed606317a1f3dbcb401b97101d9f4!
