"The old city has essentially kept its structure unchanged urban planning.
It has characteristics of extraordinary interest; it is a continuous overlapping of building structures from various periods and from different cultural backgrounds.
It has narrow, winding streets, a maze of roads, according to a typology encountered in the Islamic world; this layout various dates back to the first half of 900 AD, a period in which the city was conquered by the Saracens, who dominated it for about thirty years.
A main road, Via Antonietta De Pace, divides it into two areas, along the direction east - west, (sirocco and north wind) according to a classic planning of Greek cities.

The island is entirely surrounded by a bastioned wall, which develops for a length of about a kilometer and a half; after the massacre of Otranto by the Turks (1480) and the first half of the following century, the city in fact worked on the construction of defensive structures capable of facing the continuous attacks of enemies.
Of this rampart wall, which had its fulcrum in the Castle, today remains the only the lower part, having been demolished down to street level between 1879 and 1887.
A panoramic road, the Riviera, opened on the site of the ancient walls, allows you to stroll around the island, enjoying exciting sceneries."
