Territory:
The name 'Lonato' is believed by some scholars to derive from 'Lona', a Celtic term with the meaning of 'pond'. Traces of Roman settlements exist at Monte Mario and Pozze. Here, the first human settlements dating back to the Bronze Age (1800 BC) were established on pile dwellings. This presence is documented by artefacts found in the Polada Lavagnone and Palude Lunga areas, during several excavation campaigns.
The village, destroyed in 909 by the Hungarians as recorded in Emperor Berengar's diploma, was rebuilt and fortified. Many and various were the 'guardians' or masters who in historical times, in turn and on several occasions, took possession of Lonato and exploited it, first as a territory included in the Municipium of Verona, then as a fortified village or fortress. In 1516, the territory of Lonato came under the Venetian Republic.
In 1796 Napoleon Bonaparte entered Lonato victorious after defeating the Austrians of Field Marshal Würmser at the Battle of Castiglione. With the victory of the Franco-Piedmontese over the Austrians at Madonna della Scoperta in June 1859, the town became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
