The territory of the municipality of Gallipoli, which occupies an area of 40.35 km², overlooks the Ionian Sea with a coastline of km. The urban center, located 12 m above sea level, is made up of the old city, located on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a seventeenth-century bridge, and the village, which houses the more modern part of the city. The territory borders to the north with the municipalities of Galatone and Sannicola, to the east with the municipalities of Alezio and Matino, to the south with the municipality of Taviano and to the west with the Ionian Sea [9]. The regional natural park Isola di Sant'Andrea and the coast of Punta Pizzo falls within the municipality of Gallipoli, established by regional law n. 20 of 10 July 2006[10]. The Canale dei Samari flows south of the city. From a meteorological point of view, Gallipoli falls within the territory of southern Salento which has a typically Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Based on the reference averages, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, is around +9 °C, while that of the hottest month, August, is around +25.1 °C. The average annual rainfall, which is around 676 mm, has a minimum in spring-summer and a peak in autumn-winter.
Referring to the windiness, the municipalities of the lower Salento are weakly affected by the western currents thanks to the protection determined by the greenhouses Salentines that create a shield system. On the contrary, the autumn and winter currents from the South-East partially favor the increase in rainfall, in this period, compared to the rest of the peninsula [11].
The toponym Gallipoli derives from the classical Greek Καλλίπολις (Kallípolis), which means " beautiful city".[14] There are other hypotheses, quite weak, which take their cue from the name given to the city by Pliny the Elder: Senonum Gallipolis, hypothesizing a colonization of an already existing Messapian site by Celtic populations (Galli Senoni)[15].
