Frassine is a fraction of the municipality of Monterotondo Marittimo, in the province of Grosseto, in the Colline Metallifere area.
The village of Frassine was born in the 6th century with the name of Gualdo del Re, as a Lombard settlement.
Around the year 1000 it appears for the first time with the name Frassine, due to the presence of the fraxinus excelsior, a tree linked to Nordic traditions which was burned as a ritual to drive away the evil spirits of the woods.
Small center of lumberjacks and woodcutters, immersed in the beech woods of the Colline Metallifere, received a certain importance when, on the ruins of the old church of Santa Maria in Frassineto, already attested in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Sanctuary of the Madonna was built, then expanded during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The 16th February 1944, Frassine was the site of an armed clash between partisans and fascists which ended with the defeat of the members of the 3rd Garibaldi brigade: five of them were stabbed to death on the Campo al Bizzi farm by fascist militias and fourteen others captured and taken to Florence .
