Monuments and places of interest still stand along the harbour: Piazza Pisacane with its monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi and his solemn inscription; the 19th-century fish market, behind which is the Piazzetta delle Erbe and then the Piazzetta delle Conserve; Piazza Ciceruacchio, where the perimeter of the ancient Torre Pretoria, which once defended the harbour from the incursions of Barbary pirates, is traced; the remains of the original docks with their pilings. In the most recent section, near the lighthouse, the imposing Vinci gates now defend the town from storm surges: an achievement of modern technology carried out following the example of Leonardo's designs. The innermost section of the Canal Harbour houses the 'Floating Maritime Museum'. As the focal point of the town, many events take place here: gastronomic festivals and fairs, the 'Cuccagna dell'Adriatico' (Cockaigne of the Adriatic), and the Marineria Crib during the Christmas festivities.
